Why do personal history?

Collecting and documenting a personal or family history provides a way of creating bonds between the generations of your family. It helps children to understand the challenges their parents and grandparents faced growing up, and understanding fosters appreciation. It's a way of making your mark, of leaving a legacy, of saying, "I was here, and this is what I did with my life." It's a chance to share your love, with generations not yet born.

We've all heard the maxim, "you can't take it with you." When it comes to our personal history, however, people can take it with them, and too often, they do. Invaluable family stories go to the grave with those who lived them, when no one takes the time to document them. Of course, not everyone has the time to devote to capturing their family's stories, history, and folklore.

"Millions of Americans say they want to find the time to interview aging family members or record their own life stories, but few ever get around to it," says Jeanne Archer, president of the Association of Personal Historians. "Others put it off until it is too late, because the potential storyteller has passed away or is too ill to participate."
